NYC, NJ & LI NICUS Offering Darling Lullabies

Hello Friends and Family! I hope your 2016 year is off to a great start. Brooklyn has recovered from the recent blizzard and we seem to be back to a beautiful and mild January.

Things are moving along for Little Darling; most exciting is that by mid-March, 13 new hospitals in New York, New Jersey and Long Island will be adding Darling Lullabies as an option for distraction/calming techniques used by Child Life Specialists in Neonatal ICU's (NICUs). Patients and families will be able to access the album on electronic devices like MP3 players, IPads and IPods that are available for use in the units.

My dear friend and colleague, Patty Weiner, is making this all happen. Patty's career spans over 35 years in consulting and advocating for children with special needs. She has spent many years as a health-education specialist, child life specialist and Director of Child Life and Education Services at North Shore University Hospital. Patty created the NICU Certificate Program as the Founding Director of the Master's Degree Program in Child Life at Bank Street College of Education, and passionately continues to address the developmental needs of newborn babies, infants and babies who were born prematurely.

On January 20th, Patty and her associates at the Child Life of Greater New York began implementing a program at participating hospitals in NYC, NJ and LI called: "Reading to Babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): A Parent/Family Centered Care Approach". The program emphasizes recent research stating that newborns should be read to by their parents beginning at birth; the critical years for early brain development are 0-3 years of age. The American Academy (AAP) has revised their policy statement accordingly, to also include reading to newborns.

As a recommended additional resource, Patty and her associates are giving each hospital the Darling Lullaby album for in-patient use! What a gift; I couldn't be more honored to be a part of such an incredible program with such passionate and caring people. I'll be forever grateful for all that Patty has done to help spread my work.

This is going to be an exciting year for Little Darling!! Thanks for checking in!

With Love,
