Wee Little Katie
Last year while I was recording Darling Lullabies my stepsister, Jill, reached out to me to send me some love. She had learned of the meaning and intention behind the album and wanted to share her support and encouragement. Her words were incredibly meaningful and validating to me, as it was the precious and fragile wee-est ones like her premature daughter, Katie, that kept my soul lit with inspiration and filled with purpose on even the dimmest of days. She wanted me to stay connected and inspired by the babies and parents that I was helping, so she included several pictures of their first moments holding Katie a week after she was born - they are included below.
Recently Jill shared more details with me about their experience with Katie coming into this world 10 weeks early and weighing only 3 pounds. I can only suitably sum it up as a terrifying 15-day nightmare plus 7 weeks of heart-wrenching, roller-coaster emotions. I find it so relevant and important to note that during this agonizing time, especially when they could not hold her, Jill and her husband, Rob, experienced feelings of relief, relaxation and connection when they sung to her. They spoke to her plenty, but singing and letting their minds slip into the story of the song truly gave them a respite from the stress, exhaustion and emotion of it all. They always wanted her to know they were there, and singing was a way for them to do that.
I am so grateful for Jill's constant encouragement as well as her vulnerability in sharing (and letting me share with you!) the details of Katie's first few months, as they are so meaningful to me and the purpose of this company. Her family's first pictures helped me stay deeply connected to my goal with the album, and as we know from the data I shared in my last post, Katie experienced healing and gained strength through the songs her parents sang to her. Additionally, Jill and Rob's own experiences show us how healing music can be, no matter our age, during the most difficult of times.
I hope you enjoy these beautiful pictures & video!! The first 3 are of Katie, Jill and Rob a week after she was born and the first time they held her.
